Contribute to the environment by creating a virtuous circle in the supply chain

ARATA contributes to environmental preservation through efforts to create a virtuous cycle by taking advantage of functions in the middle of the supply chain.
Among these, we have positioned "Deal with climate change" and "Creating a recycling-oriented society" as important issues, and are promoting various measures to address them.

Deal with climate change

As a wholesale trading company that handles daily necessities and is part of the social infrastructure that supports everyone's lives, we consider risks elated to climate change, which can lead to abnormal weather and increased costs, to be an important issue.
We aim to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by balancing global environmental conservation and economic activities through activities that reduce CO2 emissions in our business activities and create a virtuous cycle in our supply chain.

In January 2022, we set a goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2013. We will continue to plan and promote energy conservation measures, use of renewable energy, and other initiatives to contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society.

Initiatives on the TCFD Recommendation

In June 2022, we endorsed the TCFD proposal and joined the TCFD Consortium, which is composed of endorsing companies and financial institutions.Climate change poses both risks and opportunities for business activities. Based on the recognition that identifying and responding to climate change-related risks and opportunities is an important management issue, we have disclosed information in our annual securities report on the four items of "Governance, Strategy, Risk Management, and Indicators and Targets" related to climate change-related risks and opportunities in line with TCFD recommendations.

Notice of Endorsement of TCFD Proposal, Participation in TCFD Consortium, and Disclosure of the Information(Written in Japanese)
We will continue to analyze the risks and opportunities that climate change poses to our business based on the TCFD recommendations and consider measures to respond to them, and we will strive to expand our information disclosure.

Reducing the Number of Returns

The daily goods industry is prone to returns, as it has a high rate of substitution of existing products with new products and product changes with each season.
The operations involved in returns, such as product disposal and return transport generate costs and extra work for retailers, manufacturers, and wholesalers such as ARATA. The disposal of products also places a burden on the environment.

ARATA implements measures to counter this problem in coordination with retailers and manufacturers, such as creating appropriate delivery plans based on demand projections. Through return reduction activities involving the entire daily goods industry, we are working not only to make supply chains more efficient, but also creating shared value (CSV) by contributing to economic effects and environmental issues.

Saving Energy and Resources

We are creating opportunities for improvements from the perspective of environmental consideration in our operations, conducting activities aimed at upholding our social responsibility as a company while also pursuing economic effects.

3R Activities

The Re-Style project of the Ministry of the Environment aims to change attitudes and inspire action around the importance of resources and 3R (Reduce: reducing use of resources and production of waste, Reuse: sharing and long-term reuse, and Recycle: waste sorting and reuse of resources). ARATA is participating in this project as a Re-Style Partner Company, a new partnership aimed at spreading understanding and agreement with the importance of resources and 3R.

Cardboard Recycling

Cardboard Recycling

At the Company’s large-scale logistics centers, a large amount of cardboard boxes arrive each day due to deliveries from manufacturers and so forth. These are compressed into cubes using a baler and collected by waste paper processors to be recycled into toilet paper and other products.
